Steering Wheel yukon - Steering Wheels

1997 GMC Yukon alot of play in the steering wheel?

Alright, while driving my 1997 Yukon, its obvious theres a problem with the steering.

If im driving on a straight road and put my steering wheel straight, the car doesnt go straight, it goes eather slightly to the right or left. If i step on the brakes and one wheel goes in a long pot hole, the car will force its way to the right/left.

What could be wrong and how much would it cost to fix it?

Could be any of the following...

Worn steering linkage...
Tie-rod ends
drag link
pitman arm

Could be slop in the steering gear box's gear lash...

Bottom line... something is worn... get it inspected as soon as you can... you would not want to loose a tie-rod while cruising on the expressway!

- Good Luck!

The center drag link is probably bad..Even a steering coupler or intermediate shaft..

It sounds to me like your steering box is going bad. But I would get a front end alignment first to see if that fixes it.

gmc yukon denali steering wheel clunk?

Is there any way to get rid of the usual clunk in the steering wheel of a 2003 gmc yukon denali? I was watching a show on tv about it and they said just to lube the shaft but does that really work? I dont want to spend a lot of money on this. If just lubing it works what kind of grease should i use?

There is a special synthetic grease used in the steering shafts to correct the noise.Problem is this is a short term fix.The steering shaft needs to be replaced to correct the noise.Best of luck.

Quick-thinking wife saves the day

My husband was driving our Yukon on the highway (cruise control set on 70) when he passed out. He was in the left-hand lane of four lanes, so I reached over and turned off the ignition and steered to the left shoulder, and then to the grassy median (I never realized how far a car can travel without the motor on!). I finally drove into a large road sign that dipped down and then back up, causing the car to finally stop. Then I took my seat belt off and called 911. My question for you: Was there anything else I could have or should have done? -- Jimmie Jo

TOM: You did very well under the circumstances, Jimmie Jo. So congratulations for keeping your wits about you and getting the vehicle to a safe stop. Great job.

RAY: For next time (which we hope there isn't), we'll give you a few better alternatives.

TOM: Turning off the engine isn't our first choice -- either for a medical emergency like this or for unintended acceleration. When you turn off the engine, you lose your power brakes and power steering. That can make it harder to control the car -- especially from the passenger seat.
