2013 Lincoln MKS: Big luxury sedan makes the most out of familiar platform

The Lincoln MKS could do the Grateful Dead on karaoke night. The road to MKS's redesigned 2013 edition, unveiled last month at the Los Angeles Auto Show, has been a long, strange trip, indeed.

Though substantially new for 2013, MKS still rides the same basic large-car platform that underpinned the then all-new Ford Five Hundred back in 2005 (and the Volvo S80 before that) — a platform that, along the way, also found a home under the current Ford Taurus and the 2005-2007 Mercury Montego, may it rest in peace.

It is well-traveled technology. But, that said, many of the changes in this new MKS are, nonetheless, notable.

For 2013, this largest Lincoln sedan is treated to engineering tweaks that promise better handling, increased power and improved fuel efficiency, along with a bevy of new and/or upgraded gizmos.

It also gets a styling update that's surprisingly cautious given Lincoln's vow that the 2013 MKS 'signal(s) direction for the brand today (and) tomorrow."
