What causes the violent steering wheel vibration when I hit the brakes at speeds above 55 MPH?
I know a lot of you will say I have warped brake rotors, but I just replaced them along with the pads and there was no improvement. The car is a 1991 Honda Accord EX with an automatic transmission. The wheel does not vibrate or even slightly move side to side during lower speed braking, only at highway speeds. Sometimes the vibration does not happen, but usually it does. Thanks for your help!
I forgot to add that I do not have anti-lock brakes.
When you replaced them, did you have them resurfaced with the correct type of equipment? I know that the box they come in says you won't need to, but I always do anyway to avoid this very problem ( I've been a mechanic for 24 years).
You need to have them resurfaced with a special hub adapter to ensure they are correctly done. If they are the captive type, meaning they can only be removed by disassembling the front hub assemblies, you need to have them resurfaced by an on-the-car type lathe.
There is a small chance you have a minor failure within a front tire. Rotate them front-to-rear and try again. If the vibration still occurs, it's gotta be in the rotor area. Make sure the surface the rotors mount to is clean.
Good luck!
Sorry
Jon
