Ford Explorer lane alerts step up safety New 2013 model to feature drift alarms, corrections, other tech advancements Alisa Priddle/ The Detroit News
The 2013 Ford Explorer will be able to alert drivers when they drift into another lane and use corrective steering to pull them back on track, said Sue Cischke, head of sustainability, environment and safety engineering for Ford Motor Co.
Cischke made the announcement Thursday. Other technologies announced include additions to the MyKey system to prevent a teen's phone from ringing while driving, eliminating a potential distraction. This also will debut on the Explorer early next year. The technologies will eventually roll out to all Ford vehicles.
Ford is emphasizing its continued commitment to safety even as it has come under criticism by third parties such as Consumer Reports for technology that some consumers find more difficult than helpful. Ford sees its Sync or MyFordTouch system as a cure for driver distraction because it offers voice commands to allow drivers to use phones and music devices while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
