i've had a loose steering wheel for a while. When driving down the road i have to keep moving the steering wheel slightly from side to side to go straight. i was told to change all these parts. I just had the steering box, tie rods, pitman arm, idler arm and ball joints replaced. After everything was done, i got an alignment, but i still have the same problem. what could be the problem???? any help will be very useful.
Smith sounds about right. I would check the air pressure in the tires as well, (do it yourself) that will make allot of difference if they are under pressure and they may not look it. There is also a nut and bolt on the top of older cars (i'm not sure if the new ones still have it) steering box that will take out excess slack in side to side movement in steering. But you need someone who knows what he is doing and someone you trust. Machanics take advantage of people every day, espeailly WOMEN.

huh - maybe where the steering column connects to the steering box is messed up? Maybe just down by the brake pedal?

How do I fix a loose steering wheel on my 1996 Ford F-150?

The steering on the truck itself is fine, its the steering wheel within the cab that is loose. I inspected it and found that there is a bearing or washer that is broken.
The ford motor co. may offer a kit to repair that steering column, unless it has just come loose under the dash. The bolts that hold the column in place may have vibrated loose. In the event you rebuild your column and find out that it was something else, there may be too much free play in the steering gear itself. There is an adjuster and jamb nut on the top plate of the steering box, try adjusting that to take out the play.
