My steering wheel has a 15-25 degree angle of movement from the center that does not move the wheels. Does anyone know if this is normal?
When i drive on the freeway at around 50 mph or more the car steers to the right or left on its own. I have to turn the steering wheel on the opposite direction and hold it there. i have to always turn the steering wheel on the opposite direction when driving. If i center the steering wheel the car sways left and right.
And one last thing is that my two front wheels are different sizes. one is 235/75 R15 104s and the other is 235/75 R15 105s. maybe this is a possible factor?
1 bad tie rod ends
2 bad steering box
3 other steering gear parts
4 tire size not a factor in loose /movement..could cause pull in one direction not both not loose

you should have your front end checked, it could have unsafe parts that could cause the problem, most good shops won't charge you to check it out, and your tires are the same size, the 104 and 105 is just a model number.

2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4- Steering Wheel Play?
Aug 24, 2009 by ChildersBrigade*714* | Posted in Dodge
It's been driving me nuts ever since I got the truck. What do I need to do to fix it? The truck is a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with a 2.5 coil spacer up front with 35" BFG's. I've got a good 4-6 inches of play in my steering. It's very tiring driving the truck on long trips and can be quite dangerous at times. I've heard about this problem but haven't got an exact answer yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. *Update* I just took a look at the steering column shaft connecting to the steering box and there is quite a bit of play at the box, my guess is I have a bad steering box?
The steering gear (steering box) is a very common failure in that vehicle. Also check your track bar very closely as the wear out regularlu too.
You need to shake down the entire front end to know for sure.
Support the vehicle by the front axle with stands, then put a large prybar under each wheel and watch for ball joint play (a helper is handy here) anything more than about .010" is excessive.
Then take a large pair of channel lock pliers and squeeze all of your tie rod ends same measurement means a worn joint. Use the same test on the ball end of your track bar (the bar from the axle on the passenger side to the frame on the drivers side) this is a very common joint to fail.
Then have your helper gently move the steering wheel back and forth while you inspect the entire steering system.
Chances are you need a gear (steering box)
Hopefully not to much more :)
Good luck!

Spindle seal leak is a relatively easy replacement. First jack up and support the truck. Open the fill plug for the gear oil and then drain from the bottom hole, reinstall the drain plug and inspect the fluid for metal. Measure the idler arm (or radius arm) attachment for the geared...
Using ring clamps, remove the internal ring clip which holds the seal in place. Using a screw driver or punch pin, carefully remove the seal by hitting it with a heavy hammer. You may only need to tap it to remove it. Don't do what I did and use a rubber mallet, you'll get nowhere....
Align the shield/cover on top of the geared hub, note the spacer placement for the front shield. Torque to 75 ft lbs for the 4 bolts and fill with a quality gear oil. Make sure the large fill nut is only hand tight, don't over torque this bolt or the drain bolt!

The seal keeps the gear oil and air separate. It's where the air is pumped through the hub to the tires for the Hummer's Centralized tire inflation system [known as CTIS].

Install the seal evenly by using a deep well socket that matches the diameter of the seal and tap it in. Ensure the seal is pressed in enough to allow installation of the ring clip.
Install the gasket around the mating surface of the steering arm/shield. Some people may...
