My Dodge's steering gearbox broke off of the frame along with the plate and broke a section of the frame off.?
Mar 16, 2011 by cameron | Posted in Dodge
I was driving one night and the steering got really loose. I looked at it when i got home and the gearbox had snapped off of the frame and broke the plate as well. I got a new plate and got the steering box back on but after I tried to turn again it broke off and took a washer shaped portion of the frame with it. I know this is a problem with dodge trucks but I don't know what exactly is binding or causing the box to continually do this. Can anyone give any help as to what I should do once I get the frame welded back how it should be?
sometimes they,ll hold and sometimes they won't,most of the time what causes that is rust or it has been in some kind of an accident earlier in its life, once a frame is heated and welded on it sometimes continues to break away from the surrounding area, that's one thing i won't do is weld on a truck frame,if you plate it and bolt it on it will hold,i have done them that way before,i got rid of a real nice truck because it had the same problem,i found out later on that it had been in real bad accident that hadn't been reported but paid for out of pocket and repaired, which made a car fax report on it useless, good luck with it.

Hi i dont know exactly where you live but for you to repair this sounds like you will need weld a plate much bigger than the part that has already broken. depending where you are this will need to be certified and checked out by an engineer and get a certificate to say its safe. I know of other models of cars that have this problem usually caused by rust, if your car has that much rust in that part of the body, then you will probably need to weigh up if it is worth the $$/putting your future safety at risk?

I have a Ford Ranger with a leaky steering gearbox?
Dec 12, 2006 by technocounselor | Posted in Ford
I dont want to pay $500 for a new one. The place said I can keep driving it. What will happen if I just keep on going and dont replace it. Will it break or just slowly get harder to steer? When I say never fix, I mean never
Just keep fluid in the steering pump.
