how to use a steptronic in a 1997 bmw 3 series?
there are 3 modes ; s, e and m
s stands for sport and m for manual right? so does e stand for economical?
how would i use the m? the gearbox allignment is
park
reverse
neutral
drive
3
2
1
there arent any levers or anything behind the steering wheel.
Steptronic?? i didn't think they used steptronic boxes on the 1997 E36 models........
Yes, you are right, S is sport which means you car will stay in gear until it reaches the higher REV range.
E is economy, the car will change gear lower down in the REV range.
The 3-2-1 if for when you are going up steep hills and the car is constantly changing up and down. Depending on your speed, you would select a certain gear, 1 for when you are at low speed and 3 for when you are at high speed. It basically holds the car in the same gear.
Now M on steptronic box should mean 'Manuel', so there should be a section next to 'park, reverse, neutral.....' where the gear stick will slot into, once in there, the car will shift up and down by the direction in which you push it in. hence the 'Manuel'
But as i mentioned above, i didn't know E36 models have steptronic boxes in them, that was more E46 technology.
well
3 is for 10% uphill
2 is for any uphill road with more than 10% but less than 40%
1 is for mountain roads

A nice
The has sharp, accurate steering, although S line cars have a very firm set-up and larger alloy wheels which harm the ride. The twin-clutch DSG gearbox is excellent and a worthwhile option, as is the Audi Drive Select (ADS) system, and more »
Everything about the car just works perfectly - from the high quality interior controls to the smoothly-shifting six-speed manual gearbox (with the exception of reverse, the selection of which always seems a bit of a fight on manual BMWs). BMW 525d SE saloon reviewall 2 news articles »
