how to use a steptronic in a 1997 bmw 3 series?

there are 3 modes ; s, e and m

s stands for sport and m for manual right? so does e stand for economical?

how would i use the m? the gearbox allignment is

park
reverse
neutral
drive
3
2
1

there arent any levers or anything behind the steering wheel.

Steptronic?? i didn't think they used steptronic boxes on the 1997 E36 models........

Yes, you are right, S is sport which means you car will stay in gear until it reaches the higher REV range.
E is economy, the car will change gear lower down in the REV range.
The 3-2-1 if for when you are going up steep hills and the car is constantly changing up and down. Depending on your speed, you would select a certain gear, 1 for when you are at low speed and 3 for when you are at high speed. It basically holds the car in the same gear.

Now M on steptronic box should mean 'Manuel', so there should be a section next to 'park, reverse, neutral.....' where the gear stick will slot into, once in there, the car will shift up and down by the direction in which you push it in. hence the 'Manuel'

But as i mentioned above, i didn't know E36 models have steptronic boxes in them, that was more E46 technology.

you mean the part with 321?
well
3 is for 10% uphill
2 is for any uphill road with more than 10% but less than 40%
1 is for mountain roads

What are the cheapest cars with paddle-shifting gearboxes?

I'd like to know what would be the top 3 cars that have such an option (automatic gearbox with paddles on the steering wheel).
I know they're optional at some BMW 3-Series, but i don't like how they're placed, they don't seem so "cool" as those in a Ferrari (of course there's a difference of class between the two manufacturers, but still)
i ment... on the european market :)

Chevy Malibu has paddle shift on the upper end models. $20K

Champs constantly looking for winners

Cording to the head of Red Bull's driver development program Helmut Marko had the team not changed its approach on looking for F1 drivers.

"Before we were looking for a driver who could make it to Formula One," said Marko. "But now we are looking for a driver who can win in F1 and there is unfortunately a big difference in that." And while credit goes to Marko and Red Bull for giving Vettel the stage on which to showcase his talents, it was actually through BMW Motorsport's own development program that Vettel got noticed in the first place.

Vettel physically prepared
"When we looked in junior categories, we noticed that Vettel won 18 out of 20 races in Formula BMW," said Marko. It was, however his physical preparedness that really caught Marko's attention. "In our diagnostic institute, his physical conditioning was remarkable," said Marko who would know a thing or two about the physical strains of driving a racing car. Albeit in a manner far different to what F1 drivers are accustomed to now.
