4. Land Rover Discovery Series II -- The Discovery model was introduced in the States in 1994, and again, was something different from what Americans had seen from Land Rover before. Easily distinguished by the unusual raised roof, alpine windows, and roof rack, the Discovery bridged the gap between the utilitarian Defender and the luxurious Range Rover. Although there was generous head- and legroom, the SUV's tall and narrow proportions resulted in poor shoulder and hip room. It would be one of the first Land Rovers to be marketed as a family vehicle, although it lacked much of the comfort and conveniences typical of a family car. In the Series II Discovery model, Land Rover claimed it had made 720 changes. The interior and exterior were reworked to be less utilitarian, while still staying true to its predecessor's styling. The rear body was also extended to improve load space. However, in making the Discovery more of a family ride, off-road capability was compromised by the increased rear overhang. The Discovery served as a stepping stone for the eventual LR4, which more evenly balances family life with off-road capability.
