The pitman arm wont come off the steering box bolt. Its stuck on the spline and im afraid if i hit it, it may damage the teeth.
I obught 2 pitman removers but they are too narrow and the other dont fit betwween the spline to grip it..its too thick .

How can i remove it off the spline bolt without damageing it. I sprayed pb blaster to hopefully losen the rust on it...should i bang on it? or wedge a crow bar between the shaft spline?

thansk

I have never had trouble getting a pitman arm off using a pitman arm puller. you need the kind that has bolts to adjust the width of the puller. tighten the bolts around the arm as tight as you can w/o breaking the bolts off. put as much pressure as you possibly can on the jack bolt then hit the end of the bolt with a big hammer several times. you may have to turn the jack bolt a few times and hit it again before it finally comes off.

Remove the bolt and nut from the pitman arm.
Find a flat chisel or old flat screw driver and drive it in between the the two halves enough to spread the shoulder apart a little bit so it will slide off easier.

Recalling how machines took over the old City

The rule book had been ruled out of order and the separation of capacities was a thing of the past. Huge mergers came about. The flagship for the UK, or so we thought, would be the mighty Warburgs who incorporated the blueblood stockbrokers Rowe & Pitman and the pre-eminent gilt jobbers Akroyd and Smithers.

Regrettably this flagship got overtaken by the Americans. However, everybody scrambled to find a partner. Lots of broking firms were incorporated into bigger firms and became integrated houses – both broker and market maker but with Chinese walls in place. One wonders, and I still do, whether these walls were solid enough.

We chose to stick to our last and although we did get taken over by County NatWest we remained a jobber. The other arm to County was Fielding Newson Smith, a broker. We continue to remain, in the main, a jobber under the umbrella of our present parent Close Brothers.

Life went on, people and firms made a lot of money, dealers overnight became rocket scientists commanding huge salaries. The whole thing got out of hand and, in fact, for many ended in tears and huge losses.
