I drive an 84 Pontiac Parisienne with a low 120k miles. While the power steering components and the steering gear seem to be working smoothly and without any detectable dead-center in the wheel, I hear suspicious noises under certain conditions when i turn the wheel. I hear and sometimes feel what i can only describe as a dull popping or cracking/snapping when i turn the wheel either way while the car is stopped, or turn the wheel to hard/fast while moving. On a side note, my pitman arm would not take grease when i lubed the steering linkage, and I have yet to fix the grease zerk. I have a feeling the problem is in the linkage due to the loudness and sometimes vibration that occurs, but any insight on whether i'm way off the mark or specific things to check for would be greatly appreciated
A rusted pitman would definately pop on wheel turn,but may b only 1 problem,if u don't know how 2 check ball joints,tie rods,control arms,& brgs. u should have a front-end shop give u an estimate on repairs.

ok well there is a vibration while driving. Im not sure what it is. My dad was checking it out and he thinks the pitman arms arnt supposed to move. (idk if thats the name.) (steering arms or something liek that) Are they supposed to move?
we havnt hit anything so i dont think it can be a bent rim. But it is more noticeable at a certain speed.
Is the vibration more noticeable at a certain speed (like say 40mph)? If so, it could very well be a bent rim. Once the vehicle hits a certain speed, a bent rim will make itself known all too well.
