A medical examiner testified Friday that a bright red mark on Tracey Richter's neck isn't consistent with being strangled by pantyhose, as she has said happened.
Richter, who was initially thought to be the victim of a home invasion in 2001, was charged earlier this year with first-degree murder. Her trial was moved to Fort Dodge after her attorneys requested a change of venue.
Richter fatally shot Dustin Wehde, 20, in her Early home on Dec. 13, 2001.
Prior to the medical examiner's testimony, Dr. John Pitman III, one of Richter's ex-husbands, and whom defense attorneys suggested had hired Wehde to kill her, said he had never met or spoken to Wehde.
Prosecutors claim Richter created an elaborate scheme to make it appear Pitman put a hit on her so she could be granted full custody of their son, Bert Pitman. Pitman and Richter were involved in what was described as a "contentious" custody dispute at the time.
Prosecutors believe a pink spiral notebook, which was found in Wehde's car, will prove their allegations. In it, the notebook's author claims Pitman hired him to kill Richter. The notebook contains references that, prosecutors say, only Richter and Pitman would have known. Prosecutors say Richter told Wehde what to write in the notebook.
