1986 Dodge 1/2 ton pu - Pitman arm replacement necessary?

The steering in our 86 dodge is LOOSE has about 3" of play in the wheel. It is fairly obvious upon observation that the pitman arm should be replaced. The truck has steered like this literally for years (previous owner did not grease front end). If we tighted the nut on the arm really well, and everything else seems ok, is the truck ok to drive (20 miles on hwy daily)????

Absolutely not! If a front end part is worn,,please replace it.By driving like that, you are not only endangering your self, but, others on the road that you may crash into. Tightening the nut will just stress an already worn part. Good luck!

only if you like steering where you want to go
you could replace that at home if you got a wrench to tighten it you was half way done not a hrad thing to replace but it does control how to you steer if it breaks or falls off you dont steer and crash cant get much more necessary and since its been years like that just makes it more likely it wil break sooner and you crash sooner

pitman arm replacement?

how hard is it to replace one? what tools will i need? if anyone has done this repair before please tell me the easiest way to do so. steps would be nice. thank you.

Center the steering wheel before removing pitman arm. Disconnect steering linkage from pitman arm. You will need a spreader (pickle fork) to make that disconnection after removing the cotter pin and retaining nut. Use a proper sized socket or wrench to remove the pitman arm retaing nut and washer. Obtain a pitman arm puller available at most parts stores or tool rental stores, install puller and tighten until arm pulls off. It can only go back on one way so look at things carefully before reinstalling. It will go back on easily if properly installed.

PITMAN — The Woodstown High School football found a variety of ways to score Friday.

The Wolverines used two rushing touchdowns, two kickoff return TDs, an interception return for a touchdown and a defensive fumble recovery in the end zone to upend Pitman, 42-12, in West Jersey League inter division action.
