Pitman Arm 1967 mustang - Pitman Arms

1967 Mustang steering box not working?

I have a 1967 Mustang, and after we "tapped" the pitman arm off the end of the steering gear, I noticed that the steering wheel is no longer steering the wheels. If I turn the nut holding the pitman arm to the gear, I can hear the steering turn. Likewise, if I turn the wheel I can see the steering shaft turn as well. But they are not connected somewhere. I have the cover off so I can see the gears, so I know they are both turning. What I'm wondering is: is there a weak point in the gears that could have broke? Or is there a connection in the gear set that typically slides out of place when working with the gear box? I want to know where to start before i start pulling all of the grease out of the box. Maybe there is a quick fix that I am not aware of. Thanks!

check the rag joint above the box..or you might have tapped the shaft loose from it's gear connection, try tapping it back in as you turn it back and forth..

There may be a shear pin on the gear inside the steering box. My suggestion is to check the rag joint on the column and all these before I go further. Next if all that fails contact Flaming River for a fast ratio replacement ASAP you'll love the effect anyway.
